10th Annual Raleigh LUNGe Forward 5K Run, Walk & Rally

September 14, 2016 (Raleigh, NC) At the 10th Annual LUNGe Forward 5K we will use our lungs to run, walk, laugh, breathe and dance.  We use our voice to celebrate the lives of survivors and remember the lives of those we have lost to lung cancer.  Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women, more than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined, but the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina strives to change that.  On Sunday, September 25, 2016 at 1 pm, they will host the Raleigh LUNGe Forward 5K Run, Walk & Rally with Duke Raleigh Hospital as the presenting sponsor.  In addition to the race, food trucks and family-friendly entertainment will also be provided.

“We’re proud to have partnered with the Lung Cancer Initiative on this event for 10 years. Duke Raleigh Hospital and the Duke Cancer Institute are committed to providing world-class care and research, closer to home. We’re excited to come together to raise awareness about cancer diagnosis and treatment, and to support survivors and their loved ones,” says Dr. Zaas of Duke Raleigh Hospital.

The five-year lung cancer survival rate has barely budged in the past decade, inching up from 15 percent to 18 percent. The efforts of the Lung Cancer Initiative aim to change these dismal statistics and give hope to those fighting lung cancer.  Proceeds will benefit the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina’s local research, awareness, education and access programs across the state. The Lung Cancer Initiative has funded over $325,000 in lung cancer research this year in North Carolina including research fellows Jordan A. Torok, MD at Duke University Medical Center and Sanggyu Bae, MD at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  They were both awarded $25,000 fellows grant in addition to 3 other researchers throughout the state.

“The LUNGe Forward 5K allows our community to make a direct impact in the fight against lung cancer.   This is a day of celebration, remembrance and most of all a way to take action and provide hope,” says Lung Cancer Initiative Executive Director, Heather Hooper.
