In June, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) had their annual meeting in Chicago. They are the world’s leading professional organization for physicians and oncology professionals caring for people with cancer. We were pleased to have Jenni Danai, our Senior Programs Manager, represent the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina. Board member, Dr. Jared Weiss of UNC Lineberger Cancer Center, shares his thoughts on the latest advancements reported this year.
1. Dramatic advances in targeted therapy will improve survival, improve quality of life, and bring these advances to more patients.
2. Intensive follow-up can not only improve quality of life, but also improve survival.
3. Combined agent immunotherapy might be even more promising than previously believed.
As always, ASCO proved that there are so many advances happening right now in the field of lung cancer. It is important to have conversations with your doctor and to stay up to date on different treatment options. Every lung cancer is not the same and therefore treatment will not always be the same. There is hope for a life beyond lung cancer!
