Survivor of the Year - Jerry Walton

In October of 2018, when Jerry crossed the finish line of the 34.2-mile Canyon de Chelly Ultra-Marathon, he was proudly wearing his “Never Give Up” t-shirt with the word “Survivor” across the back. Jerry always wears this shirt in all of his races as an inspiration to others. He has been a lung cancer advocate and volunteer of the Lung Cancer Initiative for more than five years and continues to set the standard for the enthusiastic way he spreads awareness and education about lung cancer with the public. Jerry has trained a number of other volunteers and staff on how to represent LCI in the community.

Volunteer of the Year - Melanee Bennett

Whether she’s representing Lung Cancer Initiative at Triad area exhibits throughout the year, arriving to set-up for the Greensboro LUNGe Forward race before the sun even rises or staying late in the evening to help the Greensboro committee plan logistics and send thank you notes, Melanee personifies constant dedication. She is the first to say, “Put me where you need me” and truly focused on making an impact without making a fuss. Showing sincere care and devotion to her committee as well as those being served, Melanee is an invaluable support to all those with whom she volunteers. Although she lives in Pilot Mountain (which is over an hour away from Greensboro!), she is unwavering in being present for the committee and never comes without a kind word of support and a smile.

Caregiver of the Year - Angela Nicholson

Angela’s enthusiasm, loving energy and light inspire and warm the hearts of all of those she touches. As her husband’s caregiver, Angela has used her journey as a source of inspiration to others and as a platform to advocate for the cause. Angela led the 2018 Evening of Hope Gala Committee which exceeded expectations! She brims with creativity and also masterfully solicits input from others. She supports many other LCI events with her family, from 5Ks, to educational programs, to Lung Cancer Awareness Month efforts and uses her network and social media channels to advocate for the cause.
