$10,000 Grant Awarded to Improve Access to Lung Cancer Screening
December 11, 2018 (NORTH CAROLINA) - The Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina, the state’s leading non-profit organization supporting lung cancer research and education, is pleased to announce Atrium Health's Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina as the recipient of a $10,000 Access Grant. The grant supports education to patients who may be at a high risk for lung cancer and their providers about lung cancer screening.
“Atrium Health's Levine Cancer Institute is pleased to be a recipient of the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina’s Access grant. Our Improving Lung Screening program will help educate high-risk patients and their providers about screening for lung cancer and will provide patients with the option to receive a low-dose CT for lung cancer screening at no cost.” said Jennifer Ersek, PhD, Research Manager, Solid Tumor Oncology at Atrium Health's Levine Cancer Institute.
Through the Access Grant program, the Lung Cancer Initiative awards grants of up to $10,000 each to assist institutions in improving access to lung cancer screening, treatment, clinical trials, molecular testing or precision medicine for uninsured or underinsured individuals.
“Lung cancer screening for individuals who are at high risk is the best way to identify lung cancer earlier, when it’s most treatable. We are pleased to partner with Atrium Health's Levine Cancer Institute in their efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of increased education and access to lung cancer screening among their inpatients,” says Paige Humble, Executive Director of Lung Cancer Initiative.
In the United States, lung cancer claims more lives than any other cancer and more than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. In North Carolina, around 8,490 people are diagnosed with lung cancer, and more than 5,770 are expected to die this year. Each day 22 people are diagnosed with lung cancer in North Carolina.
