The Key Club at Hickory High School will be hosting “Devlin’s Trivia Night: A Fundraiser Benefitting Lung Cancer Research & Education” on Saturday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. The fundraiser will be in memory of Helen Theresa Devlin, a former teacher at Hickory High School, who passed away from lung cancer on July 10, 2020. The Carolina Key Clubs from St. Stephens High School and Bandys High School will be collaborating to help with the fundraiser. All proceeds benefit Lung Cancer Initiative.
Devlin was a life-long educator who moved to North Carolina after years of teaching in Pennsylvania. While at Hickory High School, Ms. Devlin served for 14 years as an at-risk counselor. Most notably, Devlin was the director of the school's Sustained Training All Year program (S.T.A.Y.), a federally funded program that provides help to low-income students experiencing barriers. During the summer, S.T.A.Y. helps students get jobs, which allows them to continue building life skills. Devlin served as the Kiwanis Advisor of Hickory High School’s Key Club since 2003.

According to her students and colleagues, Devlin was always looking for ways to give back to her community. "She reminded me of the little Energizer Bunny," said Robin Chicelli, a teacher at Hickory High School who currently advises the school's Key Club. "She never stops. If she found a project or cause to help with, we were going to do it!"
Devlin was first diagnosed with lung cancer in 2017, which later returned, and ultimately led to her passing in 2020. Even in her passing, Devlin found a way to give back to her community by encouraging her loved ones to donate to Lung Cancer Initiative in lieu of flowers.
To Annie Luong, one of the Carolina Key Club’s District Lieutenant Governors and a student at Hickory High School, the trivia night fundraiser is a way for Devlin's students to honor everything she has done for their club while giving back to those affected by lung cancer.
“We want to give back to Mrs. Devlin and honor her memory by holding this Trivia Night fundraiser while helping others with lung cancer with proceeds raised benefiting the Lung Cancer Initiative,” said Luong, who has spearheaded the trivia night. “As Key Club members under Mrs. Devlin, we hope that others will help us remember her contributions and impact with this fundraiser.”
To help honor Devlin's memory and raise money to continue fueling lung cancer research, access to care, and expanding community education programs in North Carolina, please consider registering for the Hickory Trivia Night, which takes place online on February 27 and starts at 7:00 p.m., or donating, by clicking on the button below.
