Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina Hosts
Evening of Hope Gala “Roaring Towards a Cure” on April 1
Gala will be held at Raleigh’s North Ridge Country Club with dinner, auction, live music and
testimony from a lung cancer survivor
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 22, 2017) - Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina, the state’s leading nonprofit organization supporting lung cancer research and education, will host its 10th annual Evening of Hope Gala on Saturday, April 1, from 5:30-11 p.m. at North Ridge Country Club. This year’s theme will be “Roaring Towards a Cure,” and attendees are encouraged to dress in 1920s attire. The black-tie optional celebration and fundraiser will include dinner and drinks, a silent and live auction, and live music from the Carolina Moondogs.
Lung cancer survivor Justin Brian Nicholson will speak briefly at the gala, sharing his personal and inspirational journey with the devastating disease. At 36, Justin was happily married with two kids and in the best shape of his life. Being a healthy person at low risk, he never thought he and his family would be facing something like lung cancer, but a persistent cough led him to the doctor, where he received the shocking diagnosis.
Since being diagnosed, Justin and his family have become greatly involved with Lung Cancer Initiative, from fundraising to assisting with the foundation’s various events. The organization has provided them an outlet to help cope with Justin’s diagnosis, while also making a positive impact in the community by encouraging others to become aware of the disease and knowing what steps they can take when diagnosed.
Proceeds from the Evening of Hope Gala will benefit Lung Cancer Initiative’s local research, awareness, education and access programs across the state. Last year’s gala raised more than $100,000. Since 2008, Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina has funded more than $1.1 million towards lung cancer research.
“Lung Cancer Initiative is committed to funding important lung cancer research right here in North Carolina that can ultimately provide a cure to patients,” says Paige Humble, Executive Director of Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina. “We look forward to hosting the community for a lively evening that will help support the organization’s cause.”
Lung cancer claims more than 160,000 lives in the United States every year, more than any other cancer, including breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. In North Carolina specifically, nearly 8,500 people are diagnosed with lung cancer annually, and Lung Cancer Initiative estimates that more than 6,100 are expected to lose their battle with the disease this year. The efforts of Lung Cancer Initiative aim to change these dismal statistics and give hope to those fighting lung cancer.
